Year 3 right on target

Year 3 have enjoyed being engineers in the STEAM space this week. They fired projectiles using rubber band catapults “Into the Woods”, with the aim to be right on target. The only problem was that there were many tubes, bottles and rubber bands to choose from, some of which were far better for the job than others. Year 3 had to select carefully, assemble their launcher and then test to see if it worked. They then needed to make many adjustments, changes and improvements. It was fantastic to see such impressive engineering going on. If you would like to try the activity at home you can find the instructions on the excellent ExpeRimental website here.

Year 7 put the physics into art in the STEAM space

Year 7 have been playing with light and colour in the STEAM space to capture intriguing and colourful photos to launch their art project. The girls have been explaining their photographs using their physics knowledge and experimenting to find out which equipment might help them create fabulous images. A great example of STEAM injecting some physics into art and some art into physics!

Year 12 ORBYTS project gathers pace!

Since October a group of Wimbledon High year 12 students have been joined by students from Tiffin Girls’ School to take part in the exciting Twinkle ORBYTS project. We have been working with scientists from UCL and Imperial College to explore exoplanets and their atmospheres. It has been fascinating to find out what is involved in scientific research, work alongside the space scientists, and to have the opportunity to gather data using robotic telescopes from around the world. On 28th March students from both schools the will visit UCL to present their project findings to the UCL Physics department and the other Twinkle schools. Watch this space to find out what they discover! Huge thanks to Dr Will Dunn for all his encouragement and to Jana and Sian, our visiting space scientists.

Year 1 Rocket Testing

Year 1 visited the STEAM space just before half term to find out all about how rockets launch into space, They tested out rockets of their own, asking and answering questions and finding ways to measure how high their rockets launched. It was impressive to see the different ideas that they came up with. Peggy Whitson was an inspiration, both for her record breaking time in space, as well as the space equipment that she used! Find out more about the the investigations that year 1 carried out here

Year 4 First LEGO League Junior competition

A team of year 4 are currently working on their Mission Moon challenge using LEGO WeDo 2.0 to design a Moon base, solving the challenges that living on the Moon might present. Their Moon base will include some programmed moving parts. Watch this space for their ideas!

ISG Wellington House Engineers visit the STEAM space…

engineers

On Friday 21st September, Year 12 were joined by ISG Wellington House Engineers to discuss their careers in the STEAM industry.

Luisa, Alex, Magda and Tony all have different roles in the Wellington House project with ISG in structural engineering, construction management, civil engineering and project management. They spoke about the physics behind the Wellington House project, how they had solved various issues and civil engineering challenges also discussed their career paths and the skills they need – mainly communication, mathematical, problem solving and the ability to use programmes like sketch up! Thank you to the engineers for an insightful and inspiring talk.
