Year 5 busy working on the Engineer Leaders Award

Year 5 were very lucky this week to have the opportunity to meet Eleanor Mackle, a biomedical engineer, currently studying towards her PhD in medical physics at UCL. Eleanor works in a team that develops devices to monitor blood flow  during heart surgery. Eleanor’s role in the team is to make 3D printed models of the blood vessels to aid understanding and test the devices. Year 5 were able to hear all about her role and find out about what biomedical engineers do. They asked many excellent questions impressing us all! Year 5 will now be identifying problems and inventing the solutions to them as they take part in the Engineer Leaders Award. Good luck to them all.

Fantastic success in the UK Bebras Challenge 2018!

In the last few weeks girls in years 9-13 have been participating in the UK Bebras Challenge. This is a fun challenge that tests computational thinking skills. More info about the challenge is available here.
We have just found out that the pupils who took part in this challenge put in an amazing performance. Congratulations to Sienna, Rebecca and Kira who were best in school in their different age categories. 24 girls in total gained distinctions which is a tremendous achievement. Many girls have also found out that their scores placed them in the top 10% nationally. This means that they are now invited to participate in  the invitation only TCS Oxford Computing Challenge, organised by Hertford College, Oxford. Congratulations and good luck go to Sienna, Katherine, Amy, Sabrina, Biba, Ksenia, Rebecca, Phoebe, Helena, Katie, Sasha B, Saavi, Elena, Anahita, Izzy, Tilly, Toni, Jessie, Sasha, Rose, Abigail, Juliet, Eloise, Manuela, Lalita, Rebecca, Lottie, Alice, Anna and Kira.

IET Faraday Challenge Day for Year 8

A huge well done to our year 8 team that represented Wimbledon High School in the IET Faraday Challenge Day 2018. Maria, Zoe, Maddie, Cordelia, Priya and Alisha competed against teams from Tolworth Girls’ School and Hollyfield School to creatively solve a problem posed to them by the challenge day leader. As other schools are yet to compete in the challenge the exact nature of the task is top secret, but it was all to do with the James Webb Telescope. Well done to all involved – it was a fabulous day and a great opportunity to work with girls from other schools and develop teamwork and problem solving skills.
