New Scientist Live – Year 9 Academic Scholars’ are taken out of this world!

On Thursday 20th September, fifteen of our Year 9 Academic Scholars’ had the chance to attend the New Scientist Live festival at ExCel London for a jam-packed day of science and technology, hearing from some of the biggest names in the industry.

The girls immersed themselves into a range of live talks and activities from racing salt water cars to hearing first-hand from astronaut Tim Peake about his out of Earth experiences!

Thank you to Scientist in Residence, Mrs Alex Farrer for organising and assisting the girls on such an inspiring STEAM trip.

Explore Lecture: Moon or Mars – where next for humans?

Alex Farrer, one of our Scientists in Residence delivered an Explore lecture about the challenges that space exploration present. The audience voted at the end of the lecture to say whether they though humans should now target the Moon, Mars, right here on Earth or somewhere else entirely… The winner was: Mars!

Year 4 First LEGO League Junior competition

A team of year 4 are currently working on their Mission Moon challenge using LEGO WeDo 2.0 to design a Moon base, solving the challenges that living on the Moon might present. Their Moon base will include some programmed moving parts. Watch this space for their ideas!

ISG Wellington House Engineers visit the STEAM space…

On Friday 21st September, Year 12 were joined by ISG Wellington House Engineers to discuss their careers in the STEAM industry.

Luisa, Alex, Magda and Tony all have different roles in the Wellington House project with ISG in structural engineering, construction management, civil engineering and project management. They spoke about the physics behind the Wellington House project, how they had solved various issues and civil engineering challenges also discussed their career paths and the skills they need – mainly communication, mathematical, problem solving and the ability to use programmes like sketch up! Thank you to the engineers for an insightful and inspiring talk.
