Heavy storms in British Columbia
As of the 17th November, there has been dire flooding as a result of the Pacific North-West storm. So far, one person has been killed in these floods. Trudeau calls the flooding a ‘terrifically bad situation’, and Canada has since deployed its air force to assist with aid, which includes providing food, fuel, sandbags and water. There have also been reports of farmers being stranded from their trapped cattle in Abbortsford.
Yorkshire cricket racism accusations
Azeem Rafiq has condemned English cricket for being ‘institutionally racist’. In a harrowing testimony to the Commons, the former Yorkshire cricket player spoke of how ‘isolated’ and ‘humiliated’ he felt at the frequent and casual racist comments he experienced, that was shrugged off as just being ‘banter’. These allegations are not isolated; other former Yorkshire and Essex players have claimed to have experienced similar abuse from the club. Andrew Gale, head coach, has been suspended for a racist tweet he made in 2010.
Sleaze
A leaked list has revealed 47 companies awarded lucrative contracts after being recommended by an MP or a peer. The Good Law Project, a campaigning organisation, calculated that a total of ten Tory MPs and peers had secured contracts worth £1.6 billion. These lucrative contracts only intensify the allegations of sleaze dogging the conservative party and no amount of bluster will make them disappear. Both Douglas Ross (leader of the Scottish Conservatives) and Michael Gove, have been directly involved in sleaze. Boris Johnson is facing pressure to make a tangible response.
Putin’s military build-up at Ukraine border
There is a fear that Putin will invade Iran due to a build-up of tens of thousands of Russian troops have been gathered at the Ukraine border. It is feared that Russia will stage a repeat of Russia’s invasion and annexation of Crimea in 2014.
Liverpool Women’s hospital explosion
On Sunday, there was a tragic explosion outside Liverpool Women’s hospital that has been deemed a terror attack by police. The taxi’s driver, David Perry, escaped before his car caught fire and has since been discharged from hospital. The passenger, who is suspected to have set off the bomb, died in the explosion.
