Lady of the Flies: Be Nice vs The Wilds
In the first lockdown, I read Be Nice by Anabel Donald, a gender-swapped retelling of Lord of the Flies. I was left rather disappointed by it, despite the interesting concept. I was therefore delighted to watch Amazon Prime’s The Wilds over the holidays, which does justice to this premise.

This animation, describing the heart-breaking life of a ten-year-old cut short by a school shooting, forms twelve of the most skilfully articulated minutes among modern shorts.

I think it is fair to say Beth Harmon took the world by surprise. Figuratively, literally, in the 1960s and in 2020, but she did it.
While I absolutely would love to discuss the thought-out plot, accurate context and the feminist message, I will leave that to you to think about after binge-watching the miniseries, like I did. I will, however, share my thoughts on the cinematography.

It’s undoubtedly my favourite pastime – scrolling through TikTok, becoming absorbed in an incessant whirlpool of some awesome, but addictive content. It wasn’t always this way – prior to lockdown I had no idea that this platform could educate me, inspire me, and compel me to make changes to my own life. (Changes to everything besides procrastination, that is.) And there are so many brilliant Black creators whose videos I adore and who inspire me every day – so I thought I’d share a few of them with you all.
