Podcast recommendations
Podcasts can bring joy to the menial tasks of the day and are a great way to switch off, learn, or discover new ideas. At the end of 2020, when Spotify Wrapped was released, I was reminded of how much time I spend listening to podcasts. In an attempt to make use of my invested time, I have compiled a list of some of my favourites to share.
3% – the Brazilian Netflix show subtly working against the lack of diversity in Brazilian TV
Having just finished 3%, a Netflix show consisting of four seasons, the latest being released in August of 2020, I have to applaud it not only for its captivating dystopian plotline and developed characters but its beautiful diversity. Although it is saddening that seeing media with a diverse cast is surprising, I am glad that it is starting to emerge.
One Night in Miami
On February 25th, 1964, 22-year-old Cassius Clay (later known as Muhammad Ali) defeated Sonny Liston in the world heavyweight boxing championship. Instead of champagne and parties, he spent the night in a small room at the Hampton House Motel with 3 other African-American titans: NFL star Jim Brown, Legendary soul singer/producer Sam Cooke and spearhead of the civil rights movement Malcom X. All four men were at a pivotal moment in their careers and the conversations had would be life changing.
Fate: The Winx Saga – why it’s not worth the wait
The idea of a live action Winx Club adaption began in 2011, but it took a decade for that idea to become a reality. Winx Club was undoubtedly one of the best 2000s cartoons. The bright animation, sparkly outfits and fast paced plotline all made for a great show. When the reboot was first announced I was excited, but that quickly changed after watching the trailer. Fate: The Winx Saga is nothing like its predecessor—in an unbelievably bad way. The teen drama adaption clashes with the original material, with characters having their personalities, powers and relationships changed, or being axed altogether. All in all, it was 6 hours wasted. It seems others agree, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a rating of 38%. Their critical consensus of “”Flat, flimsy, and forgettable, Fate: The Winx Saga is a fantastical flop that fails to capture the magic of its source material” could not be more true.
