Year 13s Coming Back to School
UCAS? What UCAS?
Marvellous Mrs Maisel (in both name and Content)
It’s 1958 New York, and Midge Maisel is the epitome of the perfect 1950s Jewish housewife – married well, two children, and living on the luxurious Upper West Side all while attempting to support her husband’s failing stand-up career. Whether making the perfect beef brisket, or bickering with her mother about her fitness regime, Mrs Maisel seems to be living her best life – until Joel Maisel, her husband, after a spat at the comedy club, reveals that he has been having an affair with his secretary, the unfortunately named Penny Pann. Heartbroken and facing divorce, Midge drunkenly stumbles down to the comedy club and in a fit of rage impulsively performs a stand-up routine – a routine so good it catches the eye of comedy club employee Suzie Meyerson, but also the NYPD, who arrest her for public indecency and obscenity. The rest of the five-season series follows Midge’s attempt to break through as a comedienne in a male-dominated world.
The Hidden Stories in Coins: the Significance of Numismatics.
Numismatics, defined simply as “the study of coins”, is a branch of archaeology that was referred to as “the overlooked key to history” by the New Yorker in 2021. Often missed by tourists in museums due to their small size and already quite familiar appearance, there is in fact much to be interpreted from coin finds; the iconography, materials, weight, preservation, finding place, and more can reveal hidden details about past civilisations (Rodríguez, 2020).
Were You A True Year 7?
As I sadly start my final year here, looking out at the year head of me (shoutout to UCAS for inventing the torture of personal statements), I thought perhaps it was time to look back to those core year 7 memories we all have. Maybe these will hit a little close to home for you, but hopefully they prove surprisingly nostalgic. And if you are newly year 7 – I assure you, it’s a rite of passage. I hope you can take comfort in knowing everyone went through this, or at least I did.
