An explanation, and hopefully persuasion of why summer is the best season. The following piece will include reasons why summer is the best such as its weather, travel and it being the host to many great festivals.
- Weather
Firstly, weather. It is an undeniable fact that the season with the best weather is summer, even if we tend to get hot and bothered over a mere 22-degree day. The luxury experience of an ice cream in one hand, lemonade in the other and a bright beaming ray of sunshine on your face cannot be beaten. To help convince you summer’s weather is the best, let’s look at some of the other seasons…
Winter – the best way to describe how I feel about winter temperatures are to imagine frighteningly cold winds and shoots of rain gushing down the back of your neck while running through the pit on your way to a period 6 and 7 double lesson of English (no offence to the English department).
Additionally, the NHS estimates that over two million people in the UK are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD is a type of depression that occurs during decreases in daylight hours and is commonly linked to seasonal changes. According to the NHS, SAD ‘comes and goes seasonally’, with the lower sunlight hours of winter arguably marking it as the bringer of these worse times.
While spring and autumn bring milder weather, they still fall inferior to summer. For those of us in Y11 or Y13, you will understand the struggle of springtime meaning revision time. Additionally, while autumn has its perks like Halloween, the increasingly cold weather and pumpkin spice lattes unfortunately lower its position in my rankings of the seasons. Therefore, summer’s warm sunshine and blue skies make it my favourite and arguably the best season.
2. Travel
In my opinion, summer is the best time for travel. The long school holidays and warmer weather make the best conditions to travel and relax in. Spring and autumn can be good for travel too, but the weather is often a little chilly for my liking and we have already discussed the issues surrounding winter above. However, summer is when holiday destinations are at their best. Outdoor markets are thriving, parades and celebrations are taking over cobblestone streets, and beaches are looking their most picturesque – what’s not to love?
And, who said you need to leave the UK? With seaside towns like Cornwall and Brighton being only a train ride away, they make for the perfect summer weekend get-away or even day trip! Personally, I have been to Cornwall once and would highly recommend a seaside sausage roll or pastry on the beach front as a post-swim treat.
3. Festivals
Similarly to travel, all the best festivals happen in summer. Whether it is your Y11 end of exam celebrations at Reading, Y12 summer at Boardmasters, or even an influencer fav Lollapalooza or Coachella, festivals are such good fun. The warmer weather (although it did torrentially down pour during my Reading experience, but we will keep that quiet), music, food trucks, and most importantly silent discos make for some great and long-lasting memories. Although festival life often means sleeping rather uncomfortably through the experience in a sleeping bag and tent, festivals are still a leading factor in why I love summer and think you should too.
And, most importantly,
4. It is Scott’s house music theme!
While this piece may now seem a sneaky gimmick to get readers like you to unknowingly agree Scott is the best house by agreeing with the line of argument that summer is the best season, I do truly believe summer is the best (and Scott).
