Following Scarlett’s attempt to convince you that summer was the best season, I felt it was only fair that I took my own chance to persuade you that, in fact, autumn proudly holds that title.
Yes, summer may brag about sunshine and festivals, but autumn has something far better to offer: the perfect mix of everything. Crunchy leaves, cinnamon scents, perfect coat weather, and the best aesthetic. Below, I’llwalk you through why autumn wins the seasonal crown, covering everything from fashion and weather to TV shows and the comfort of a hot drink in the cold.
- Autumn Fashion
There are endless options when it comes to dressing for autumn. Warm knitted jumpers, thick scarves, cosy cardigans, and boots finally get their moment in the spotlight after months of hiding in your wardrobe. If you’relike me and you love a long coat, then this is your time to thrive.
The beauty of autumn also lies in the perfect opportunity for layering. You can build an outfit that is warm enough to feel snug, light enough that you’re not overheating (because it’s usually not as cold as you’d expect) and stylish enough that you’ll always look put together! Autumn fashion simply does it all.
2. The Weather
Since autumn technically starts in late September, you don’t experience the deep depths of the cold until much later – often not until winter which starts mid to late December. This means that for most of autumn, the weather sits comfortably in that perfect mild in-between: crisp and refreshing but warm enough to go outside without shivering as if you were clambering through the Arctic. This is very much true however for winter where the weather brings nothing but numb fingers, horizontal rain and winds aggressive enough to blow you over. Autumn on the other hand brings balance. The temperature is just right for warm drinks, blankets and autumnal dog walks.
Compare this to summer, when the ‘perfect’ 22-degree day quickly morphs into a sweaty battle for shade or air conditioning.
And although spring is on the milder side too, it marks the start of hay fever season where suddenly all you feel are streaming eyes, sneezing fits and the fear that you’re accidentally overdosing on antihistamines (which I do not condone).
Autumn avoids all of this. Its weather feels calmer and atmosphere as if you’ve stepped straight into an episode of Gilmore Girls, walking through crunchy leaves with a warm drink in hand.
3. The Autumn Aesthetic
Autumn isn’t just a season as there’s so much more to it.
It’s an opportunity to rewatch Gilmore Girls. Although it’s a show that I would recommend all year round, watching it in autumn makes it ten times better.
Autumn is also the only season where hot drinks truly shine again. After the often overbearing heat of summer, you can return to finally enjoying a hot chocolate, tea or coffee again instead of buying one as a means of survival for keeping warm in winter.
It’s also a season which makes reading seem somewhat appealing again, even for those who aren’t avid readers like me.
And lastly there’s Halloween of course!
So overall what is there not to love about autumn? With its perfect mix of fashion, weather and cosy aesthetics, it’s a season that truly has it all. And, similar to Scarlett’s attempt to put summer in the spotlight, this is my chance to finally give autumn, and by extension Hastings, the recognition it deserves before the battle of the seasons (and houses) next Wednesday on Off-Timetable Day.
