Is it just me, or does being back at school feeling kind of crazy? Maybe it’s having to accept that my first “lasts” have started (genuinely cried over my last first day of school), but it’s making me feel very nostalgic. And so, I thought, given that we have just finished our first (full) week of school, we should look at all the usual suspects we see on the first day of school.
But before we do, I wanted to say a massive welcome to all our new students, in particular the new Year 7s, welcome to Wimbledon and welcome to secondary school!
Year 7s
- It’s a big day, but definitely an exciting one.
- You’ve met your houses already, but now it’s time to meet your forms and your form tutor!
- The scavenger hunt around the school is a rite of passage, and (other than some split-up groups) you all smashed it!
- If you’ve got a sibling further up the school maybe you feel proud to be joining them (or maybe the opposite), but either way, Wimbledon may already be feeling familiar.
Year 12s
- No uniform! Woohoo! I remember being so worried about my first day of school outfit in year 12, and feeling really quite cool joining the cohort of 16-18 year olds who have graduated from the days of wearing uniform.
- New year. New subjects. New you?
- The novelty of going out for lunch hasn’t worn off yet: all the Pret and Itsu might be starting to add up…
Year 11s and 13s
- Exams are looming so we’re all trying to keep energy high.
- The same teachers and classes as last year (which I really like) so the return to school isn’t filled with quite as much anticipation.
- But it’s also a pretty exciting year, you feel old (in a good way), and the Y13s get to say that we’re the top of the school.
SLT
- This is fully me just calling myself out, but an 8am start on the first day of school was quite something.
- Energy is either through the roof, or through the floor, but they’re happy to be there either way.
- Someone has mentioned that we only have two terms left as WHS SLT and we’re already feeling sad about it.
The sports players
- Preseason has meant that it kind of feels like school has already started, but only the best bits.
- You’re used to the earlier mornings and not being able to have a nap during the day, so you’re more prepared than the rest of us.
The one who is still on holiday on the first day.
- I have always envied you. School is great (and I really mean it) but seeing pictures of Greek islands and safaris while in London it rains is pretty tricky.
- You come back to school tanned and relaxed… maybe a bit of a shock to the system?
Me
- You may be asking: Martha, why are you including yourself on this list? It seems a bit odd.
- Well, this year I was quite literally bouncing off the walls with energy on the first day. Unheard of, I know.
- If you’re anything like me, you were so ready for school to start again and to see everyone. Summer is a really long time to go without seeing everyone.
And with that I will leave my first Unconquered Peaks article of the year, but I can’t wait to write many many more. There are already some new ones in the works.
