Whose Fingerprints Were Found on History?

Imagine walking into an art gallery and being able to identify the artist. Not from just a signature, but from microscopic traces of DNA they accidentally left behind thousands of years ago. It almost sounds like something out of a crime drama; except this time the suspects lived in prehistoric caves.

For the first time ever, scientists have recovered ancient human DNA directly from cave walls, including surfaces containing prehistoric rock art. Until now, researchers have had to rely on bones or teeth to learn about the people behind these artworks. But this breakthrough suggests the walls themselves may have been quietly preserving genetic evidence all along.

The team analysed cave sites across Spain and Portugal, searching for tiny fragments of DNA that had survived for over 2,000 years (and likely much longer). While only a handful of samples contained usable human DNA, that’s enough to completely change how archaeologists think about these caves. Rather than simply admiring the paintings, we may one day be able to ask: Who actually made them? Were they men or women? Were different groups returning to the same caves over generations?

Of course, the discovery comes with a catch. The DNA can’t yet be directly linked to the artists themselves as it could have been left by someone visiting the cave long after the paintings were created. Still, it’s an exciting proof of concept. I mean we can all agree that science rarely hands us perfect answers on the first try; instead, it gives us better questions to ask.

It’s remarkable to think that while the paintings have captivated us for millennia, the cave walls were preserving an entirely different story at a microscopic level. Sometimes history isn’t rewritten by finding something new but more about realising what we’ve been walking past all along.
