My Top 10 Things to do Instead of Revising

Maybe you are a procrastinator, or maybe you are one of those extremely lucky people who have already finished your exams (can’t relate) and are suddenly at a loss at what to do with all that free time – either way, here’s 10 of my favourite activities should you ever be in need of inspiration.

Stress eat

Something I think we all may have enjoyed. Bonus points if it’s something you’ve stress baked *looks wistfully at the homemade cookies right there just on the kitchen counter*.

Play power songs

Would recommend – a great way to trick yourself into a good mood, especially when your usual sunny disposition failed to join you on the unsociably early journey to school. Go find that main character moment (and if you’re lucky the wind just might be blowing in the right direction for a change).

Sit in the sun

AKA doing nothing, except maybe managing to acquire a nice pre-summer sun burn (wear sunscreen, kids!). Since (at least in my family) we tend to dramatically inflate the hot weather by five-ten degrees depending on our mood, lounging around uselessly outside was obviously going to feature on my list. But actually, I really wouldn’t say ‘useless’ because it does still count as fresh air and we all know how good that is for us.

Binge watch TV

Always. Works every time. Just maybe not for your sleep schedule. Same with books – you think: ‘oh I’ll just pick this up for a bit until I get sleepy’ but then, suddenly, it’s been around three hours and you realise you’re turning the pages suspiciously fast because you’re only reading approximately every other line and processing a grand total of none of it. Maybe not quite what the author would have wanted.

Have a bath

Here’s a quick guide: fail to wait until a socially acceptable time in the evening. Justify it by taking some random revision notes in. Almost drop said notes in the bath. Give up entirely on them. Spend ages and practically grow old in there (wrinkled skin and everything).

Have a shower

Totally different vibes to a bath and no one can tell me otherwise. It is, however, just the elite version of recommendation number two (power songs). What another perfect opportunity to go have your moment (although, warning: the running water does NOT provide much cover for your singing).

Cultivate a hobby

Because those random *self-improvement* impulses from lockdown never truly left. Or, perhaps more accurately, you end up spending your time scrolling mindlessly on Instagram or TikTok and watching other people flex their newfound skills or whatever. I mean, it still counts, right?

Go annoy someone

The ideal candidate is a sibling (because what else are they for), and my personal favourite is to walk into their room, make eye contact, and then silently walk out, leaving the door infuriatingly ajar. Warning: use only as a last resort and if you are mentally prepared to deal with the disproportionate amount of amateur dramatics following. Although that could just be my delightful sister.

Meet with friends

This could be guilt free and a celebration of newfound freedom – Years 9, 10 and 12 looking enviously at you. But fear not, everyone else – perhaps it’s a ‘well deserved’ break, or even done under the pretence of a study buddy. Although I’ve never managed to make that one work – probably because of my tendency to pace angrily across the room whilst reciting whatever I’m trying to force into my brain.

Spontaneous dance party

Too much of that stress eating has on occasion made me a little hyperactive, and I have actually ended up doing this. 10/10 would recommend, especially with the (preferably non-judgemental) company of friends. Just… maybe with no phones, because do you really want to immortalise that moment for everyone?

Go on a run

JUST JOKING DON’T WORRY – I wouldn’t do that to you.
