Getting to Know the SLT 2023-24: Head Girl

In keeping with last year’s tradition, I have decided to sit down with the different teams within the SLT to discuss the new roles, the shape they would like their leadership to take in the following year, and of course, take the opportunity to get to know them all better. And where better place to start, than with our new Head Girl, Poorna.

What makes a Good Leader?

I think a good leader is someone who ‘walks amongst their peers.’ For previous Head Girls, I was always inspired by the fact that they knew people within my year group and in all year groups. It made them feel less distant, more approachable and above all integrated into the community.

What do you want to bring most to this year of school?

I think that most of all I want to continue bringing the light and fun that was brought back by the outgoing SLT. But also, a top priority for me is continuing to raise awareness within our school of sustainability and the environment. In our first meeting within our new group, a main point I raised is how we need to add the few extra steps to any school event we run to make it even more sustainable. I would really like that extra consideration to be our SLT legacy.

What are you most intimidated about taking on role of Head Girl?

There are so many ideas and so many different events we are all really enthusiastic about – I think you can see that from our group chat messages already. I’m not that intimidated by compromise because I think our team is already so amazing at that, but being able to follow through on all the things we want to do is a bit intimidating, and being able to pick and choose what is the most important to us as a collective.

And now onto a few more light-hearted questions. First, what would you bring to a Desert Island?

Definitely a piano, a scout leader (because they can survive in the wild and keep me company) and a fruit seed to grow an orange tree.

What book are you reading at the moment?

Bitch by Lucy Cook. It’s about the misconceptions of the female role within wildlife. Each chapter is about a different species and the different roles the females play within them. I would definitely recommend it.

Favourite TV show/Movies

I love all Marvel Films, Top Gun, Lala Land and Whiplash. And of course, anything Bollywood. I don’t watch that much TV, but I do love watching any kind of wildlife documentaries – specifically David Attenborough

Favourite lunch?

Macaroni cheese. But if I’m going out for lunch, I would go for Tortilla.

And final question, what are your favourite three songs? (SLT playlist will be available on the Unconquered Peaks Spotify after all interviews have been published.)

Never Had a Dream Come True by S club 7, Flame Twin by Noah Jones and Waterloo by ABBA
