Getting to know the SLT 2023-24: Head Girl Team

In keeping with last year’s tradition, I have decided to sit down with the different teams within the SLT to discuss the new roles, the shape they would like their leadership to take in the following year, and of course, take the opportunity to get to know them all better. And this week I spoke to our fantastic new Deputy Head Girl Team: Lauren, Evie and Phoebe.

Take us through your understanding of your role and what it entails?

P – My role is a bit of amalgamation of roles from previous years: I am a deputy head girl and head of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team, which I especially want to prioritise for this year. I am also Arts representative – Music, drama and art – leading on events within in those areas. As for this year, Pride Month is going to be legendary.

L –I am also a deputy head girl, but with a focus on the community voice. This year we’re really going to be pushing to hear feedback from other years throughout the school.  Championing STEAM is also part of my role, which is exciting as I do study science, but STEAM encompasses more than just that one discipline. The STEAM+ expo was so enjoyable this year, with the amazing speakers and involving everyone in the school. Even more of an inter-disciplinary approach and having STEAM+ events with our partner schools are things I am really interested in pursuing.

E – I am the third deputy Head Girl, and I’m leading on community action, which includes charities, partnerships, sustainability and charter, but more than just that it’s about encouraging people within the school to take action and use their voices. Seeing results within our community is really important for me as well, both in school and in the wider area. Partnerships is something we are really interested in expanding in that respect.

Why are you excited for the following year ahead?

P – I’m really looking forward to the musical events, perhaps some more concerts and battle of bands!

E – Sports day, since we haven’t had one since year 7 because of rain and the pandemic, so we really want to make sure it’s the best one ever, no matter the weather.

L – For me I’m just really looking forward to the summer term specifically, with school community erupting outside and sharing that space together.

Does anything intimidate you about the coming year?

L – Managing our expectations and action all the things we have wanted to do, having looked up to people in these positions for so long.

P – Making a strong legacy, filled with community feeling, particularly post pandemic.

E – I just really want people to have fun. But ask me again on the day of our first Off-timetable day, because at the moment I’m just really excited to get going.

What is your must-watch TV series and Film, and your must-read book?

E – A must watch TV series is definitely Modern Family. My favourite book at the moment is Humankind and the best movie would be any kind of romcom and of course Star Wars.

P – My film is the 2020 production of Emma, especially since the score is written by Iso Waller-Bridge. My TV series would have to be Our Flag Means Death and my book would be Orlando by Virginia Woolf.

L – Gosh that’s a hard one. My favourite TV series is probably White Collar, the movie has to be Bedknobs and Broomsticks – I’ve watched that about one hundred and fifty times. My book would be anything written by Agatha Christie, specifically the Murder of Roger Ackroyd.

What would be your dream meal?

L – For starter spaghetti bolognaise and garlic bread (yes that is a starter), for my main, a prawn and chilli pasta. For dessert a slice of chocolate cake, a piece of banana bread and a salted caramel ice cream. As I drink, I think I’d go for a virgin mojito.

E – To begin I would have to say the Pizza Express doughballs, main: a burger and skinny GBK fries (but not soggy). For dessert a chocolate ice creams, raspberries, banoffee pie and some eclairs. The drink would be a lemon San Pellegrino.

P – (This is so hard!) My starter would be hash browns, my main would be my mum’s beef donburi and my pudding with be a some fried mochi. For my drink I would like Fortnum and Mason earl grey tea.

What are your top three songs? (SLT playlist will be available on the Unconquered Peaks Spotify – unconquered_peaks – after all interviews have been published.)

L – Rude Boy and Umbrella by Rihanna, and Golden hour by JVKE

E – Piano man by Billy Joel, Dog Days are Over by Florence and the Machine, and Breaking Free from High School Musical (it’s just iconic).

P – I Know the End by Phoebe Bridgers, What He Wrote by Laura Marling and Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance.
