The Great British Spring Clean

Ava encourages us to appreciate the great outdoors, which has been so important for us over the last year, by joining the Great British Spring Clean.

Does the idea of a “Spring Clean” spark joy or doubt within you? I would not blame you if it was the latter. Though the idea of tidying might seem tedious, this event brings the spring clean mindset out of our homes and into local communities, for everyone’s benefit – and your knowledge that you are making a difference!

Spring cleaning outdoors

The Great British Spring Clean is an initiative to care for our outdoor spaces. At present, we have a strong dependency on greenery. With Covid taking away our privilege to meet indoors, parks and beaches have become social hotspots. Respecting the great outdoors is incredibly important as it provides us with calm, enjoyable spaces. But unfortunately, these areas have often been overrun with people leaving heaps of litter.

Bring your friends along to a park and help out with cleaning the area. Even if you’re busy over half term, there is a brand new litter-picking club at school, so you can join in when you’re back. Here is what you need to know to get started, whether at the beach, in your local park or at school.

The Great British Spring Clean started on 28 May and ends on 13 June. This gives you all the time you need to do some litter picking at your own pace, wherever you think it is needed. Make sure to pledge that you will be litter picking to support the charity Keep Britain Tidy

Is it worth it?

Three girls in Year 10, Ava, Bianca and Anais, did litter picking at South Park Gardens. Bianca said, “It was just a great experience and I felt I was helping my community in a real way. It was like when I have tidied my room and am finished – that same contentment and satisfaction!” So get walking and take action – litter pick for the Great British Spring Clean!
