Meet the Eco Team

Biodiversity:

The Biodiversity team are on a mission to engage our school community with all things related to nature. From forming an online Gardening Club during lockdown, running competitions and activities for different year groups, adding bird feeders around the site, to reviewing landscape plans for Project Ex-Humilibus, they are always up to something!

Communications:

As David Attenborough observed last year, “Saving the planet is now a communications challenge.” The communications team works to inform and educate our community and the wider world about the pressing need for action and the ways that all of us can have an impact. As well as running this blog, you can find them on Instagram (@whs.environment) and Twitter (@EnviroRep_whs).

Litter & Waste:

The Litter & Waste team wants to help the school minimise the amount of waste produced by the school, encourage correct recycling habits, and reduce the amount of litter around the school. So far they have completely overhauled the recycling system in the school and started a new student group (the Litter Looters) dedicated to keeping our site tidy.

Healthy Living:

Estimates show that between one quarter and one third of global carbon emissions come from food and its production. The Healthy living group are looking at how we can tackle this issue within our community, both by making our menus more sustainable and reducing the amount of food that we waste.

Energy:

At the heart of the Climate Crisis is our demand for energy and resources. Many of the things that we value in our lives require a huge amount of energy: electricity, heating, clean water, transport, connectivity, new things…

The Energy and Utilities group aim to make the school’s use of energy and utilities such as water more efficient. So far they have audited all the lights in the school, learned about the complex world of swimming pool covers, and established the highly competitive inter-year Switch Off competition.
