Which F1 Team You Should Support, Based On Your Favourite Football Team

F1 has been rapidly gaining global traction as of late, with new fans discovering the sport every day. If you are a new fan and you want to find your F1 team, all you need to do is read this article and match up your favourite Premier League football team with an F1 team. Disclaimer: I don’t follow Premier League football that much, so it might be a bit inaccurate. Enjoy! 🏎️⚽

If you support Man City:

  • If you are a Man City fan, then your best bet is Red Bull. Both teams have been dominating for the past few years, with strong heads (Christian Horner – head of Red Bull since 2005, and Pep Guardiola – manager of ‘City since 2016). However, both teams now have a bit more competition to look out for, especially Red Bull, as their F1 domination seems to be coming to an end.

If you support Liverpool:

  • Liverpool fans should support Mercedes. Both teams are going through a rough patch by their standards, and both teams have their main man leaving. For Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp, the manager that brought them six major trophies, has just left. And for Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton, the driver that has brought them 7 WDCs and 8 WCCs, is going to Ferrari for 2025.

If you support Manchester United:

  • Man United 🤝 Ferrari. Both are iconic red teams that had massive success with iconic team personnel in the 2000s, but now not so much. For Man United, this was obviously with Sir Alex Ferguson and Cristiano Ronaldo. Whereas for Ferrari, it was with Jean Todt and Michael Schumacher. From 2000-2006, Man U won three Premier League titles and the FA Cup once. Meanwhile Ferrari won the WDC and WCC four times (2000-2003) and achieved 72 race wins from 2000-2006, more than any other team in this period.

If you support Everton:

  • If you are an Everton supporter, then you will perfectly fit in Williams fans. Williams used to be massively successful in the ‘80s, winning the WCC four times in this decade, but now it has become a backmarker team. Unfortunately, the same can be said about Everton, which peaked back in the 1980s (where they reached FA Cup Final on 3 occasions and won it in 1984), but at the time of writing is currently 20th in the Premier League table.

If you support Tottenham:

  • Spurs fans will find themselves at home with McLaren F1 team. Tottenham has never won the Premier League, however in their 1950s-1960s dominance they won the First Division twice, and the FA Cup three times in ’61, ’62 and ’67. McLaren, like Spurs, experienced domination at one point – in the 80s and 90s with F1 greats Alain Prost and Ayton Senna. However, McLaren has only won 4 WDCs since 1991, while Ferrari has won 8, and Mercedes and Red Bull have won 7 each. Additionally, both teams are renowned for their state-of-the-art facilities: the Tottenham stadium, and the McLaren Technology Centre

If you support AFC Wimbledon, Wrexham, or any other British team not in the Premier League:

  • For any football team not in the Premier League, such as AFC Wimbledon or Wrexham, the best F1 team to support is VCARB. This is the Red Bull junior team, formerly known as AlphaTauri (2020-2023) and Toro Rosso (2007-2019). The reason that VCARB corelates with these non-Premier League teams is because they have not made it into the big leagues either. They are a team used to test junior drivers before moving them to Red Bull, and therefore have only achieved 2 wins, compared to Red Bull’s 110.

F1 dictionary:

  • WDC = short for World Drivers Championship, which is what all twenty f1 drivers fight for during the season. Each race they get points for finishing in the top 10, and these go towards the WDC. The drivers with the most WDC titles are Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher – tied with 7 each
  • WCC = World Constructors Championship. All points that drivers score during races also go towards a separate teams championship, the WCC. The team that wins the WCC gets lots of money at the end of season, while the team that comes 10th gets the most wind tunnel time, which allows them to have more opportunity to develop next season’s car. The most successful team in F1 is Ferrari; they have 16 WCC titles.
  • Backmarker = the two or so teams that are consistently at the back every F1 race. They are usually lapped every race. Some of them, such as Haas and Williams, are often used for trialling young, rookie drivers so that the bigger teams (in Haas’ case this is Ferrari and in Williams’ case this is Mercedes) can see them perform in an F1 car. Backmarker teams are not set in stone though; Haas are currently 7th out of 10 in the WCC standings so are technically a ‘midfield’ team rather than a backmarker right now.
